Why IFRS S1 and S2 Training Matters

The ISSB’s IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 standards represent the most significant shift in corporate reporting since the adoption of IFRS financial standards. Through Malaysia’s National Sustainability Reporting Framework (NSRF), Bursa Malaysia is implementing mandatory IFRS-aligned sustainability disclosure requirements with a structured implementation timeline. Organizations that are not preparing now face a compressing window to build the governance structures, data systems, and reporting capabilities these standards require.

The gap between knowing what IFRS S1 and S2 require and being able to disclose against them is significant. It involves cross-functional coordination across Finance, ESG, Investor Relations, Risk, Strategy, and HR. It requires governance structures that assign clear data ownership. It demands climate scenario analysis that connects to financial reporting. Most disclosure teams have not yet built these capabilities, and the timelines are not waiting.

This training closes that gap in one structured day. Your disclosure working team leaves with a practical understanding of both standards, a completed gap assessment against current disclosure practice, and a structured NSRF readiness roadmap with governance, data, assurance, and reporting timelines.

Action Planning

Training Methodology

IFRS S1 and S2 are detailed standards. This workshop is designed to build working knowledge, not theoretical familiarity, using interactive lectures, cross-functional group discussion, a structured gap analysis exercise, and a practical roadmap workshop that participants leave with completed.

Industry Case Studies

Cross-industry sustainability disclosure examples illustrating how IFRS S1 and S2 requirements apply across different sectors, governance structures, and business models. Case studies include examples of good disclosure practice and common gaps that appear in real-world IFRS-aligned reports.

Interactive Lectures

Structured delivery of IFRS S1 and S2 content using real sustainability disclosure examples and case studies across industries. Explanations are grounded in practical application, not standard recitation. Participants understand not just what each requirement says but how organizations at different maturity levels are implementing it.

Implementation Roadmap Workshop

The capstone session: participants develop a structured NSRF Readiness Roadmap covering governance structures, data ownership assignments, assurance preparation, and reporting timelines. This is a working document, not a template, built for your organization's specific disclosure position and implementation context.

Group Discussions

Facilitated cross-functional discussions that draw out the different disclosure perspectives of participants from ESG, Finance, Investor Relations, Strategy, and HR, helping teams understand the interdependencies between their functions and build the internal alignment that effective IFRS disclosure requires.

Disclosure Gap Analysis Exercise

A structured hands-on workshop where participants review sample disclosures against IFRS requirements, identify gaps in their current coverage, data availability, and governance structures, and produce a prioritized gap register that directly feeds into the NSRF Readiness Roadmap developed in the final session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IFRS S1 and IFRS S2?

IFRS S1 sets out general requirements for sustainability-related financial disclosures across all material sustainability topics, covering governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets. IFRS S2 is a specific standard focused entirely on climate-related disclosures, requiring climate governance, physical and transition risk assessment, climate scenario analysis, and Scope 1-3 GHG emissions reporting. IFRS S2 is built on the same four-pillar framework as IFRS S1 but applies it specifically to climate. Both standards are issued by the ISSB and both are adopted by Malaysia’s NSRF.

Who needs to comply with IFRS S1 and S2 in Malaysia?

Malaysia’s NSRF, implemented through Bursa Malaysia’s sustainability reporting requirements, applies to listed companies with phased mandatory implementation timelines. Large public-listed companies are in scope first, with broader rollout following. Beyond listed companies, organizations in supply chains of listed entities, those seeking institutional financing, and companies with multinational stakeholders face growing expectations to align with IFRS-based sustainability reporting standards even before mandatory requirements apply to them directly.

Why should our full disclosure working team attend together rather than just the ESG team?

IFRS S1 and S2 require disclosures that span the entire organization. Finance must understand how climate risk connects to financial reporting. IR must communicate how sustainability affects long-term value creation. Legal and Compliance must understand governance requirements. HR must understand social and workforce metrics. Strategy must integrate material sustainability risks into forward planning. When only the ESG team attends, other functions remain uninformed of their responsibilities and implementation stalls. This workshop is designed to build shared understanding across all disclosure functions in a single day.

What is a disclosure gap analysis and what does your organization get from it?

A disclosure gap analysis compares an organization’s current sustainability disclosure practices against the specific requirements of IFRS S1 and S2. In this workshop, participants review sample disclosures against IFRS requirements, identify which elements are currently disclosed, which are partially covered, and which are absent or inadequately supported by data or governance. The output is a prioritized gap register that directly feeds into the NSRF Readiness Roadmap developed in the subsequent session.

Does our team need prior IFRS or sustainability reporting experience to attend?

Prior IFRS financial reporting experience is helpful but not required. Prior sustainability reporting experience is useful but the workshop begins with the regulatory context and standard fundamentals before progressing to application and gap assessment. Participants from non-finance functions, including HR, IR, Strategy, and Communications, will find the content accessible and directly relevant to their disclosure responsibilities.
