HAZOP Participant Training

Know Your Role. Contribute Where It Counts.

Course Overview

A HAZOP study is only as effective as the people in the room. This 1-day training equips engineers, supervisors, and technical professionals to understand hazard and risk concepts, follow the HAZOP process with confidence, and contribute meaningfully during every stage of a HAZOP workshop.

Why HAZOP Participant Training Matters

Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study is one of the most powerful and widely used process hazard analysis techniques in high-hazard industries globally. When conducted well, it systematically identifies how deviations from design intent can lead to hazardous consequences, and it drives the implementation of the controls and barriers that prevent major accidents.

But a HAZOP study depends entirely on the quality of participation. When team members do not understand what HAZOP is trying to achieve, how guidewords are applied, or what their specific role requires of them, the study misses hazards. Missed hazards that are not identified during a HAZOP study may only become visible during an incident.

This training directly addresses that gap. In one structured day, participants develop the foundational knowledge and practical confidence to contribute effectively to HAZOP workshops from day one.

Learning Outcomes

Participants of this course will gain the following key learning outcomes:

  • Build understanding on key concepts of hazard and risk in relation to process safety
  • Attain good appreciation on the importance of the HAZOP process
  • Understand their role within the HAZOP process and participate effectively during a HAZOP workshop

Who Should Attend

Engineers, executives, supervisors, and technicians of all disciplines who are expected to participate in a HAZOP workshop in any capacity.

  • Process Engineers
  • Operations Personnel and Supervisors
  • Maintenance Engineers and Technicians
  • Instrumentation and Control Engineers
  • HSE Professionals
  • Design and Project Engineers
  • Plant and Facility Managers
  • Technical Executives
  • Mechanical and Piping Engineers
  • Compliance and Regulatory Officers

Course Outline

A tightly structured day that takes participants from hazard and risk fundamentals through to a hands-on HAZOP workshop exercise.

Training Methodology

A variety of teaching methods are used throughout the day to engage participants, reinforce learning at each stage, and ensure the HAZOP workshop in the afternoon builds on a solid foundation of knowledge.

Interactive Lectures

Structured presentation of HAZOP concepts using real process safety examples, major incident case studies, and industry-relevant scenarios. Designed to build genuine understanding, not just awareness.

Case Studies and Workshops

Analysis of real HAZOP applications and process safety incidents, showing how HAZOP could have identified the hazards that led to major events and what a well-conducted study looks like in practice.

Quizzes

Short knowledge checks throughout the day reinforce key concepts, confirm understanding of guidewords and team roles, and prepare participants for effective engagement in the practical workshop.

Discussions and Q&As

Facilitated group discussions and a structured closing Q&A connect HAZOP principles to participants' specific operations, discipline backgrounds, and industry contexts.

In-House Delivery

HAZOP Participant Training is designed for in-house delivery. Training your entire HAZOP team together ensures consistent knowledge, shared language, and immediate application in your next HAZOP study.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do participants need prior HAZOP or process safety experience?

No. This is a foundational participant-level course designed for professionals who have not yet participated in a HAZOP study, or who have participated but want to build a more structured understanding of the methodology. The course begins with process safety fundamentals before moving into HAZOP concepts, so no prior knowledge is required.

What is the difference between HAZOP Participant Training and HAZOP Leader Training?

HAZOP Participant Training is designed for professionals who will attend and contribute to HAZOP workshops as team members. It covers the HAZOP methodology, guidewords, team roles, and participation skills. HAZOP Leader Training is a more advanced program designed for engineers who will facilitate and lead HAZOP studies, covering session planning, facilitation skills, documentation standards, and managing complex team dynamics. Participant Training is the recommended prerequisite before progressing to Leader Training.

What industries is this training relevant to?

HAZOP Participant Training is relevant to any industry using processes involving hazardous materials or energy, including:

  • Oil and gas (upstream, midstream, downstream)
  • Petrochemical and chemical manufacturing
  • Power generation
  • Pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals
  • Food and beverage processing
  • Mining and minerals
  • Any facility subject to OSHA PSM, Seveso, or DOSH major hazard regulations requiring formal Process Hazard Analysis

Can participants bring their own P&IDs or process documentation to use during the workshop?

Yes. For in-house delivery, we encourage participants to bring simplified P&IDs or process flow diagrams from their own facility for use during the workshop exercise. Working with familiar processes makes the learning significantly more applicable and helps participants immediately connect the HAZOP methodology to their actual operations. Confidentiality of your process documentation is maintained at all times.

What course materials will participants receive?

All participants receive comprehensive printed course notes covering all sessions and topics and a Certificate of Attendance. The course notes serve as a practical reference guide participants can use during their real HAZOP sessions after the training.

How do we submit a HRDCorp claim for this training?

We provide all required documentation including the course outline, trainer credentials, official receipts, and attendance certificates. Our team guides you through the HRDCorp portal submission process step by step.
