HAZOP Leader Training

Lead Every HAZOP Study with Confidence and Rigor.

Course Overview

Facilitating a HAZOP study requires more than knowing the guidewords. It demands preparation discipline, team management skill, and the technical depth to ensure no credible hazard escapes the room. This 2-day advanced program develops exactly those capabilities, supported by 6 to 8 hours of pre-course e-learning.

Why HAZOP Leader Training Matters

The HAZOP leader is not a passive facilitator. They are the person responsible for ensuring that every credible deviation is examined, every safeguard is evaluated with genuine rigor, every team member’s knowledge is drawn out, and the study produces a defensible set of findings that actually reduces risk. That is a demanding role that requires skills well beyond knowing how to apply guidewords.

Poor HAZOP facilitation produces low-quality studies. Studies that miss hazards because the team moved too fast. Studies where action items are weak or generic. Studies that cannot withstand regulatory scrutiny because the methodology was not applied consistently. Studies that fail the facility’s real purpose: preventing major accidents.

This training develops the full skillset that HAZOP leaders need: technical depth across continuous, batch, and procedural processes, advanced facilitation techniques, team dynamics management, and the ability to recognize and address the failure modes that cause HAZOP studies to fall short.

Learning Outcomes

Participants of this course will gain the following key learning outcomes:

  • Build knowledge on the HAZOP process and its facilitation
  • Apply the concepts of hazard and risk during a HAZOP workshop
  • Able to lead a HAZOP workshop effectively

Who Should Attend

Team leads, engineers and executives of various disciplines who are expected to lead a HAZOP workshop.

Course Outline

An intensive two-day program built around four progressive HAZOP workshops, each introducing new complexity in process type, team challenge, or failure scenario.

Trainer: Ir. Johan bin Jainudin

Chartered Engineer | 26 Years of Experience

Ir. Johan bin Jainudin CEng MIChemE, a consultant, speaker and trainer with 26 years of working experience in Malaysia and internationally. He has worked with large corporations such as Shell & Petronas, including stints with Foster Wheeler UK, General Electrics Italy, Wood Mackenzie Singapore and Sudapet, Sudan.

He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng) by Engineering Council UK, a member & Chartered Chemical Engineer (MIChemE) by Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK, and a Professional Engineer (Ir.), Board of Engineers Malaysia.

Training Methodology

A multi-method delivery designed to build both technical depth and facilitation skill through progressive application across four distinct workshop scenarios.

Pre-Course E-Learning

6 to 8 hours of structured online modules covering foundational HAZOP methodology, guidewords, process safety context, and the Risk Management Model. Must be completed before Day 1 of the face-to-face program.

Report Critique

Participants review and critique HAZOP documentation produced during the workshops, developing the ability to identify quality gaps, correct errors, and produce records that meet regulatory review standards.

Interactive Lectures

Advanced technical content delivered using real major incident case studies, regulatory requirements, risk assessment frameworks, and equipment failure mode analysis. Built for participants who arrive with foundational HAZOP knowledge from the e-learning.

Four HAZOP Workshops

The core of the program. Various workshops spanning continuous process, procedural and batch. Each participant leads sections of each workshop, receiving real-time facilitation coaching from the trainer.

Discussions and Q&As

Facilitated group discussions connect HAZOP leadership principles to participants' actual operational contexts, specific process types, and regulatory environments.

Workbook and Quizzes

Structured workbook exercises and knowledge checks throughout both days reinforce key concepts and ensure participants consolidate their learning between workshops.

In-House Training Delivery

Wellkinetics offers customized in-house HAZOP Leader Training tailored to your specific processes, P&IDs, and industry context. Train your entire team together using your own facility scenarios and HAZOP studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to complete HAZOP Participant Training before attending HAZOP Leader Training?

Completion of HAZOP Participant Training or equivalent HAZOP experience is strongly recommended. The pre-course e-learning covers foundational concepts, but the face-to-face program assumes participants already understand basic HAZOP methodology and can apply guidewords. Participants without any prior HAZOP experience may find the pace of the workshops challenging.

Is the public training session limited in size?

Yes. Public sessions are kept to a maximum of 10 participants to ensure that all participants have adequate time leading HAZOP workshop sections and receiving individual facilitation coaching from the trainer. Sessions typically fill 3 to 4 weeks before the course date. Early registration is recommended.

Can we use our own process P&IDs during the workshop exercises?

For in-house delivery, yes. We strongly encourage it. Using your own P&IDs and process documentation during the workshops means participants leave with HAZOP facilitation experience directly relevant to their own processes. For public training, standardized case study scenarios are used to ensure consistency and confidentiality across the mixed participant group.

How does this course differ from a HAZOP Participant Training followed by additional on-the-job HAZOP experience?

On-the-job HAZOP experience as a participant provides process exposure but does not develop facilitation skills. This course specifically trains the competencies that are not developed through participation: advanced facilitation techniques, team dynamics management, study planning and scoping, failure mode recognition, and the risk assessment connections that determine how a study should be scoped. Experienced HAZOP participants who have led studies without formal training often find this course identifies specific gaps in their approach they were not previously aware of.

How do we submit a HRDCorp claim for this training?

We will provide all required documentations: course outline, trainer credentials, and official invoice for your HRDCorp grant application.

Not sure if your team is ready for HAZOP Leader Training?

Our training advisors can assess your team’s current HAZOP knowledge and experience level and recommend whether HAZOP Participant Training, HAZOP Leader Training, or a combined program is the right fit. We can also design a tailored PSM capability-building pathway for your organization.
