Pre-Startup Safety Review Training
Verify Readiness. Start Up Safely.
Verify Readiness. Start Up Safely.
Starting up a process before it is truly ready is one of the most consequential decisions in industrial operations. This 1-day intensive Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) training equips your team to conduct rigorous PSSR, catch what others miss, and prevent startup-related incidents before they occur.

The moment hazardous materials or energy are introduced into a process is one of the most critical in its entire lifecycle. Whether it follows a new installation, a modification, or a period of shutdown, startup exposes hidden flaws: incomplete construction, improperly implemented changes, missing procedures, undertrained personnel, and safety systems that have not been tested.
Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR) falls under the CCPS PSM Elements and is one of the last systematic opportunities to catch these gaps before they lead to a major incident. Yet in many organizations, PSSR is treated as a checklist formality rather than a rigorous verification activity, and the personnel conducting it lack the knowledge to do it properly.
This training changes that. In one day, your team will understand what PSSR is, when it is required, how to conduct it effectively, and how to act as a change agent for PSSR implementation in their facility.
Participants of this course will gain the following key learning outcomes:
All personnel involved in the planning, execution, or authorization of process startups across operations, maintenance, engineering, HSE, and project functions.
A structured single-day program progressing from PSM foundations through to a hands-on PSSR practical workshop.
Every method used in this program is selected to move participants from conceptual understanding to practical application within a single training day.
Structured delivery of PSSR concepts with real major incident case studies, regulatory requirements, and industry examples tailored to participants' operational contexts.
Participants analyze real PSSR failures and successes, determine PSSR triggers for realistic scenarios, and complete a full hands-on PSSR on a practical case study in the afternoon workshop.
Knowledge checks at key points throughout the day reinforce learning, confirm understanding, and ensure participants are prepared to apply concepts in the practical workshop.
Facilitated group discussions and a structured Q&A session connect PSSR principles to participants' actual operations, startup challenges, and regulatory environment.
PSSR Training is designed for in-house delivery. Your team trains together using your actual startup scenarios and operational context, ensuring maximum relevance and immediate applicability.
PSSR Training is relevant to any industry that operates with hazardous materials, energy, or complex processes, including:
Yes. For in-house delivery, we encourage clients to share their existing PSSR documentation in advance. Incorporating your own checklists, forms, and startup procedures into the practical workshop means participants practice with the actual tools they will use in their day-to-day work, which significantly increases post-training application.
All participants receive comprehensive printed course notes covering all five modules, workshop materials and the practical PSSR case study, and a Certificate of Attendance. The course notes are designed to serve as a practical reference guide participants can use when planning and conducting PSSRs after the training.
We provide all required documentation including the course outline, trainer credentials, official receipts, and attendance certificates. Our team guides you through every step of the HRDCorp portal submission process.
The full competency your operations, engineering, and HSE teams need to conduct rigorous pre-startup reviews and prevent startup-related incidents.
Wellkinetics provides hands-on PSSR program development, procedure design, PSSR facilitation support, and integration with your organization’s MOC and PSM systems.
